Donald K. Grayson: Giant Sloths and Sabertooth Cats : Extinct Mammals and the Archaeology of the Ice Age Great Basin

Giant Sloths and Sabertooth Cats : Extinct Mammals and the Archaeology of the Ice Age Great Basin

Description

As the Ice Age came to an end, North America lost a stunning variety of animals. Mammoths, mastodons, ground-dwelling sloths the size of elephants, beavers the size of bears, pronghorn antelope the size of poodles, llamas, and carnivores to chase them-sabertooth cats, dire wolves, American lions and cheetahs; these and many more were gone by 10,000 years ago. Giant Sloths and Sabertooth Cats surveys all these animals, with a particular focus on the Great Basin. The book also explores the major attempts to explain the extinctions. Because some believe that they were due to the activities of human hunters, the author also reviews the archaeological evidence left by the earliest known human occupants of the Great Basin, showing that people were here at the same time and in the same places as many of the extinct animals. Were these animals abundant in the Great Basin? A detailed analysis of the distinctive assemblages of plants that now live in this region leads to a surprising, and perhaps controversial, conclusion about those abundances.

The powerful bond between humans and dogs is one that s uniquely cherished. Loyal, obedient, and affectionate, they are truly man s best friend. But do dogs love us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology Giant Sloths and Sabertooth Cats : Extinct Mammals and the Archaeology of the Ice Age Great Basin download ebook pdf to study how the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at him: "What is my dog thinking? Queen Malice has cast her most dangerous spell yet! The wicked queen has cursed the Magic Hourglass and when the sand runs out, all the magic will be gone from the Secret Kingdom forever! Jasmine, Ellie and Summer must find the four Enchanted Objects to break Queen Malice's spell, but the second one is deep in an undersea cavern. Can they get the Silver Shell before the Storm Sprites do? Praise for "The Priority of Christ

Violent Geographies : Fear, Terror, and Political Violence download pdf

Derek Gregory,Allan Pred: Violent Geographies : Fear, Terror, and Political Violence

Violent Geographies : Fear, Terror, and Political Violence

Description

"Violent Geographies is essential to understanding how the politics of fear, terror, and violence in being largely hidden geographically can only be exposed in like manner. The 'War on Terror' finally receives the coolly critical analysis its ritual invocation has long required." -John Agnew, Professor of Geography, UCLA "Urgent, passionate and deeply humane, Violent Geographies is uncomfortable but utterly compelling reading. An essential guide to a world splintered and wounded by fear and aggression-this is geography at its most politically engaged, historically sensitive, and intellectually brave." -Ben Highmore, University of Sussex "This is what a 'public geography' should be all about: acute analysis of momentous issues of our time in an accessible language. Gregory and Pred have assembled a peerless group of critical geographers whose essays alter conventional understandings of terror, violence, and fear. No mere gazetteer, Violent Geographies shows how place, space and landscape are central components of the real and imagined practices that constitute organised violence past and present. If you thought terror, violence, and fear were the professional preserve of security analysts and foreign affairs experts this book will force you to think again." -Noel Castree, School of Environment and Development, Manchester University "A studied, passionate and moving examination of the way in which the violent logics of the 'War on Terror' have so quickly shuttered and reorganized the spaces of this planet on its different scales. From the book emerges a critical new cartography that clearly charts an archipelago of a large multiplicity of 'wild' and 'tamed' places as well as 'black holes' within and between which we all struggle to live." -Eyal Weizman, Director, Goldsmiths College Centre for Research Architecture

The events within the narrative are spare and enigmatic: Yokoyama is as much fascinated by shapes and visual effects as he is by character and plot. John Nathan: Mishima: A Biography

Mishima: A Biography

Description

At forty-five, Yukio Mishima was the outstanding Japanese writer of his generation, celebrated both at home and abroad for The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea. In 1970 he startled the world by stepping out onto a balcony in Tokyo before an assembly of troops and plunging a sword into his abdomen; a disciple then beheaded him, completing the ritual of hara-kiri. John Nathan's riveting biography traces the life of this tortured, nearly superhuman personality. Mishima survived a grotesque childhood, and subsequently his sadomasochistic impulses became manifest--as did an increasing obsession with death as the supreme beauty. Nathan, who knew Mishima professionally and personally, interviewed family, colleagues, and friends to unmask the various--often seemingly contradictory--personae of the genius who felt called by "a glittering destiny no ordinary man would be permitted."

In this, Yuichi Yokoyama's long-awaited original graphic novel, published simultaneously in Mishima: A Biography download ebook Japan and France, a stripped-back plot and minimal characterizations allow the artistry of Yokoyama's ethereal drawings to shine through. Eventually, they arrive at a building where a man welcomes and guides them to the "world map room," where they inspect a library. Eventually they leave, and reach a pond with a sunken ship. Their guide starts to explain the ship's history, and slowly, with casual suddenness, the novel comes to a close. Adam Henson: Like Farmer, Like Son

Like Farmer, Like Son

Description

'People say "Like father, like son", and the story of my life has mirrored my father's to a quite uncanny degree. Right from when I was a little boy, he was my rock; my mentor; my hero. It is no exaggeration to say that he taught me virtually everything I know about both country life and television. Without him, I certainly would not be doing what I am today...'. Agriculture and show business may appear to be unlikely bedfellows, but for Countryfile presenter Adam Henson, as for his father, Joe, who tragically passed away in the autumn of 2015, they are the twin poles that have defined his life. First and foremost, Adam is a farmer. Raised on the same farm in Gloucestershire, Bemborough Farm, that he runs today, Adam can often be found with his sleeves-rolled-up, involved in every element of the day-to-day operations. Like Farmer, Like Son is a truly remarkable account of Adam's life that explores a hidden family history and the unbreakable bond between Adam and his life-long hero: his father Joe. In the 1940s and '50s, Joe, the son of stage and film star Leslie Henson, chose a completely different path, alien to his thespian parents and decided to pursue a career as a farmer. In addition, Joe overcame a serious stammer to become a regular broadcaster on Country Matters and also became the saviour of Britain's rare breeds. He even put his business and his reputation at stake to open the world's first Farm Park. Here, for the first time, Adam reveals the family traits, childhood experiences and farming wisdom which have made him the man he is today. As he trawls the family archive and discovers his own bloodline, Adam learns to understand and appreciate the famous grandfather he never knew and pays tribute to the wonderful father he has so recently lost.

Robert McGee's bestselling book has helped millions of readers learn how to be free to enjoy Christ's love while no longer basing their Like Farmer, Like Son free ebook self-worth on their accomplishments or the opinions of others. Now this book will change the lives of countless teens as well, in this completely rewritten student edition of "Search for Significance." With updated illustrations, practical application points, youth challenges, and journaling space, this version of the classic book is perfect for any teen or youth group. Teens will learn to: Experience the amazing truth that their self-worth is found not in their accomplishments or what their friends and family think of them, but in God's love for them Discover how their lives have been negatively affected by the four big lies that the world teaches about significance Learn to stop looking in all the wrong places for affirmation and affection Gain life-changing confidence as they learn the true meaning of what God has done for them in Christ

Stendhal,Jean Stewart,Bert Cyril J.G. Knight,Gilbert Sale,Suzanne Sale: Love

Love

Description

A timeless treatise on the unique power of human emotion, Stendhal's Love is translated by Gilbert and Suzanne Sale with an introduction by Jean Stewart and B.C.J.G. Knight in Penguin Classics. In 1818, when he was in his mid-thirties, Stendhal met and fell passionately in love with the beautiful Mathilde Dembowski. She, however, was quick to make it clear that she did not return his affections, and in his despair he turned to the written word to exorcise his love and explain his feelings. The result is an intensely personal dissection of the process of falling - and being - in love: a unique blend of poetry, anecdote, philosophy, psychology and social observation. Bringing together the conflicting sides of his nature, the deeply emotional and the coolly analytical, Stendhal created a work that is both acutely personal and universally applicable. This translation retains all the colour and passion of the original and is accompanied buy the author's original prefaces and appendices. In their introduction, Jean Stewart and B.C.J.G. Knight discuss the relationship between Stendhal and his beloved and explore his views on feminism, education and society. Stendhal (1783-1842) was the pseudonym of Henri Marie Beyle, born and raised in Grenoble. Offered a post in the Ministry of War, from 1800 onwards he followed Napoleon's campaigns throughout Europe before retiring to Italy. Here, as 'Stendhal', he began writing on art, music and travel. Though not well-received during his lifetime, his work, including The Red and the Black (1830) and The Charterhouse of Parma (1839), now places him among the pioneers of nineteenth-century literary realism. If you enjoyed Love, you might like Gustave Flaubert's Sentimental Education, also available in Penguin Classics. 'The single most insightful book on the role of imagination on love' John Armstrong, author of Conditions of Love: The Philosophy of Intimacy

Secrets of God: Writings of Hildegard of Bingen

Description

Visionary, mystic, poet, musician, naturalist, healer, theologian-the Rhineland nun Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a Renaissance woman long before there was a Renaissance. This is the first book in English to offer a representative selection of writings from all of her amazing range of work. Hildegard wrote many volumes on subjects from mystical vision to sexuality, from theology to natural medicine--in letters, treatises, poetry, and songs--all in an age when few women wrote more than an occasional letter. Shrine

Description

A little girl called Alice. A deaf-mute. A vision. A lady in shimmering white who says she is the immaculate conception. And Alice can suddenly hear and speak, and she can perform miracles. Soon the site of the visitation, beneath an ancient oak tree, has become a shrine, a holy place for thousands of pilgrims. But Alice is no longer the guileless child overwhelmed by her new saintliness. She has become the agent of something corrupt, a vile force that is centuries old. Innocence and evil have become one. Sail Away: Whitesnake's Fantastic Voyage

Description

Incredibly, this is the first ever full-length biography of mega-popular Whitesnake (Omnibus Press published a pictorial one in 1989, which is long out of print). Surprising really, because the band has been part of heavy rock's landscape since 1978, selling 30 million records. They also have a good story to tell and a new album to release. Nobody is better placed to tell the story than seasoned Canadian rock writer Martin Popoff.

Stan and Charmaine are a married couple trying to stay afloat in the midst of economic and social collapse. Living in their car, surviving on tips from Charmaine's job at a dive bar, they're increasingly vulnerable to roving gangs and in a Sail Away: Whitesnake's Fantastic Voyage download book rather desperate state. So when they see an advertisement for the Positron Project in the town of Consilience - a 'social experiment' offering stable jobs and a home of their own - they sign up immediately. All they have to do in return for this suburban paradise is give up their freedom every second month, swapping their home for a prison cell. At first, all is well. But slowly, unknown to the other, Stan and Charmaine develop a passionate obsession with their counterparts, the couple that occupy their home when they are in prison. Soon the pressures of conformity, mistrust, guilt and sexual desire take over, and Positron looks less like a prayer answered and more like a chilling prophecy fulfilled.

Golden Urchin

Description

Mitji lived with the Aboriginal tribe for as long as she could remember, but with her white skin, thin nose, and red hair, she does not look like the rest of the tribe. As she nears womanhood, her oddness has made her an outcast and she must leave her people. She goes on a walkabout, in search of the walypalya, the tribe with red hair and white skin like her own, who had come from the great waters perhaps they would receive her kindly and let her stay with them. On her wanderings she comes upon a white man, lying half-dead in the blazing heat, and nurses him back to health. Together they made their way to his home. There, Mitji becomes known as Meg and comes to understand that she was herself one of the walypalya. There are new dangers amongst this tribe and Meg must confront the terrors of a long sea voyage before she can find happiness on the other side of the world. Only the knowledge gained from her Aboriginal tribe can guarantee her survival and that of her friends."

Pope Benedict XVI: Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives

Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives

Description

"New York Times" Bestseller! The momentous third and final volume in the Pope's international bestselling Jesus of Nazareth series, detailing how the stories of Jesus' infancy and childhood are as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago. In 2007, Joseph Ratzinger published his first book as Pope Benedict XVI in order "to make known the figure and message of Jesus." Now, the Pope focuses exclusively on the Gospel accounts of Jesus' life as a child. The root of these stories is the experience of hope found in the birth of Jesus and the affirmations of surrender and service embodied in his parents, Joseph and Mary. This is a story of longing and seeking, as demonstrated by the Magi searching for the redemption offered by the birth of a new king. It is a story of sacrifice and trusting completely in the wisdom of God as seen in the faith of Simeon, the just and devout man of Jerusalem, when he is in the presence of the Christ child. Ultimately, Jesus' life and message is a story for today, one that speaks to the restlessness of the human heart searching for the sole truth which alone leads to profound joy. "From the Hardcover edition."
